    Details
This is an upper intermediate level course (B2 in the Framework of ‘vantage’ – level). For this examination, students will have a broad grasp of vocabulary and be able to construct an argument. Their knowledge of English should be adequate for many practical purposes, including business and study. In order to be successful, the student also needs to be able to demonstrate an awareness of the conventional, as well as a degree of formality as expressed through language.

This course is ideal if you want to work or study abroad or to develop a career which requires language skills (e.g. medicine, engineering, business, etc. ). An FCE certificate indicates sufficient proficiency for the student to be of practical use in clerical, secretarial and managerial in many industries, especially tourism, where contact with non–English speakers is required. Successful candidates will have the ability to deal with routine letters and telephone enquires and to cope with non-academic training courses and simple textbooks and articles.

FCE is also useful preparation if you are working towards higher level exams, such as CAE (Certificate in Advanced English) and CPE ( Certificate of Proficiency in English).

On passing the exam, you will receive a certificate awarded by the University of Cambridge ESOL Examination board, which is recognised by universities and employers throughout the world. You will also receive a full breakdown of your results, showing how you performed in each of the five papers.

The FCE Exam consists of the following five papers:

Part 1: Reading (about 70 minutes)
Tests ability to read and understand texts taken from books, journals and magazines.
Part 2: Writing (about 90 minutes)
Tests the ability to write non-specialised text types such as reviews, compositions, letters and articles.
Part 3: Use of English (about 74 minutes)
Requires you to demonstrate your grasp of the language by completing a variety of tasks at text and sentence level. E.g. filling gaps, identify errors in the text.
Part 4: Listening (about 40 minutes)
Assesses the ability of the candidate to understand the meaning of spoken English and get the "gist of" spoken text.
Part 5: Speaking (about 40 minutes)
This evaluates the ability to interact in conversational English, in a number of different contexts.
